We’ve all been told at some point in our lives that we should keep oil far away from our skin–whether it had been a beauty counter rep telling you, your doctor or your mama! It didn’t matter if it was oil splattering up from fried chicken pan, the natural oils we find in our skin, or organic oils. To us women, all kinds were synonymous with “no bueno.” Because oil = breakouts, right?
Not necessarily.
The key is to use plant-based oils and the major key (insert DJ Khaled voice here) in utilizing oil is finding the best one for your skin type. In this case, we’re talking acne prone skin. Contrary to what we were taught, there are oils that unclog pores, treat and actually fight acne. Many types of face oils bring about a glow (not grease), moisturize and even help with skin discoloration due to their vitamin and antioxidant richness.
Face Oils = Must-Have in Your Beauty Arsenal
I know, I know. You’re still a bit iffy about face oils. I have combination skin and the slightest hint of shine has me diving for my matte foundations and finishing powder, so I feel ya. But I’m telling you, you need to test it for yourself! I wrote more about finding the perfect natural face oils for acne prone skin here!
At the time I wrote the above article, I was in my senior year of college, going through, y’all. And ever since I learned more about oils, I wanted to try. But I was a punk. I used a popular Sephora brand oil and didn’t see it doing much for my skin so I gave up on it reallll quick. I tell you guys time and time again how afraid I am of trying new products (I literally pray over them) so I don’t venture out in terms of my skincare much. I stand true to the products that have never done ya girl dirty!
But, you have to switch your skincare sometimes.
A couple of weeks ago, Credo Beauty had me testing the waters all over again! Mostly because of their classy ambiance and organic products. The amazing shop held a private event for my NYC Blogger’s Weekend with bubbly, girl talk and major skin goals. We even got to leave with a couple of products! I knew right then and there that I was going home with an oil!
I ended up with the Rosehip BioRegenerate Oil by Pai. I heard sooo many things about roseship so I was drawn to that first. Then, I learned that the high end product is suited for every skin type, including sensitive skin like mine! The bottle says it, “deeply conditions skin, boosting firmness and elasticity while promoting a clear, even skin tone. Rosehip BioRegenerate Oil can be used to improve dry patches, flaky patches, blemishes, dull skin tone, fine lines, scars, and sun damage.”
I can attest to allllll of this. I’m not too fond of the smell but it leaves me with such a lovely glow that makes it worth it. I also got the Pai Geranium & Thistle Rebalancing Day Cream — I’ve been wanting a gentle moisturizer outside of my typical Cetaphil and baby lotion lol. It balances out your natural oils and is actually a top moisturizer used on fashion shoots!
I can’t go without telling you about this other oil that I’m using on my body: Wen Bamboo Green Tea Restorative Treatment Oil. Okay you guys, I am obsessed with this one! Mostly because of it’s smell lol. It can be used in the bath, hair or body but I use it for the latter right after I shower. It smells soooo good, I breathe in the scent on my skin like…once it’s applied lol. Yes, obsessed! It immediately nourishes and makes my skin softer. The oil quickly disappears so there’s no glow, but you still look thoroughly moisturized…and the scent lasts throughout the day!
Once I find something I like love, I stock up. Credo and Wen, watch out!
This really open up my eyes to maybe trying oil for my skin I have always avoided because yes my mother scared me with the breakouts but if I can find the one that right for my skin why not

Yes! Don’t be afraid like me lol. Just do tons of research! There is one for you. I currently am all oiled up in bed haha
I used to shy away from facial oils for the very reason you stated, but I’ve recently grown curious about them. I will def be getting familiar with the Wen oil (I’m a sucker for the good smell lol). Thank you for sharing!
Lol do it, do it! I promise you’ll love it.
