How do you feel about titles? I used to be a fan of them because it made things a bit easier for me whenever people asked what my profession was. And of course, knowing my titles was clutch for creating Instagram bios.

I’m the Christian girl who’s the fashion influencer turned Teen Vogue writer turned pageant queen turned Syracuse alum turned author. But then God placed me in a season of uncertainty where I didn’t know who I was. Or rather, I didn’t quite know what to call myself. I would think to myself, “I’m an author but I do more than just writing. I am a speaker but I don’t do it all the time. I’m a business owner but it’s also a ministry.” I had so many buts and in this silent season of working but waiting, I was so confused with who He will have me be.

Growing up, I always found difficulty putting what I feel God has called me to do into words and He always reminded me there is a place for me that has not yet been created. And in this tumultuous time, He cut off all titles and reminded me there is more than what I call myself.

And there is more for you, too.

We don’t need a name to define what we do. There is a spiritual title that defines who we are.

We don’t need a name to define what we do; there is a spiritual title that defines who we are. Click To Tweet

Maybe like me, you don’t know what category you fit in. Or maybe you have names for yourself that aren’t so kind and loving towards yourself. I know of a name that will eradicate every lie the world warped your mind around – a title that will eradicate every negative name you have claimed for yourself.

In my book, Claim Your Crown, I share the best title a girl could ever have is to be called, “Daughter of the King.” I’ll be sharing a glimpse by meditating on Ephesians 1:3-14 and revealing 10 truths about being a daughter of God.

The passage is a little lengthy but it’s a good one so hold on and soak it in! Ephesians 1:3-14 says:

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding, he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.

In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.

Alright, let’s get into dissecting.

Who You Are as a Daughter of God, The Highest King

1) You are blessed.

According to the first verse we see that God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, is the one who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing. We receive each and every single blessings in Christ alone. What’s so amazing about the blessings God bestows on us is the fact that we don’t have to stove for it. It’s already ours.

It’s already yours because being a daughter of the King makes you an heiress to the kingdom. According to Titus 3:7, we have been justified by the grace of God so that we can have hope of eternal life. That means the sacrifice of Jesus made us heirs! We are not only blessed in heaven, God calls us blessed on earth, too. Our inheritance has been promised to those who love Christ (James 2:5).

So yes, we are blessed – and it is not like how the world considers blessed! It’s better! The riches we have in heaven will never be destroyed. That’s why the Bible tells us to focus on storing our treasures in heaven. Moths and rust can’t destroy our prizes there! Thieves can’t break in and steal from us (Matthew 6:20). Our inheritance is divinely protected. It is an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you (1 Peter 1:4).

Note: That’s not to say God won’t bless you if you’re rich or you’re not considered blessed if you’re rich. Anyone who lives for Christ is considered blessed.

2) You are chosen.

For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.

Because, you are chosen, you are set apart. God sees you in a crowd of people. He looks down on His throne and knows you are one of His.

One of my favorite verses is 1 Peter 2:9. It says, “But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.”

You are not like everyone else. God’s hand on you is intentional. It’s so intentional that He points out that you have nothing to do with your call on your life. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. (John 15:16)

3 & 4) You are holy & blameless.

You’re probably looking at yourself like “who me?” I am far from innocent. But that’s not what Paul was talking about here in this passage! Oftentimes, we look at being “holy and blameless” as being an impossible standard so we ignore that part, we strive to be perfect or we freak out.

To be holy and blameless is something we already are because all of our guilt was laid upon Jesus on the cross. It died there. That includes anything unholy, disgusting, shameful–every single blemish. It’s no longer held against us because the righteousness of Jesus covers us. When God looks at us, He sees Jesus living on the inside.

5) You are adopted.

I especially love this part. If you’ve watched my personal testimony, you’d know that I used to struggle with seeing God as a loving Father. I saw Him as the King who was waiting for the proper opportunity to punish me. It took me a while to experience the love of God and honestly, it’s still a process but I know He loves me.

And He loves you too. He loves you so much that He sent His one and only Son to die on the cross of Calvary for our sins. He loves us so much that He gave us the opportunity to be free, to commune and fellowship with Him.

We have the honor of calling God, “Abba, Father” (Galatians 4:6-7). He desires an intimate relationship with us. If your earthly father has failed you in any way, know that your heavenly Father will never leave you nor forsake you. He’s here to stay. Since you are God’s child, He has made you his heir.”

6) You are redeemed.

Redemption provides several benefits for the believer: eternal life (Revelation 5:9-10), forgiveness of sin (Ephesians 1:7), a right relationship with God (Romans 5:17), peace with God (Colossians 1:18-20), the Holy Spirit to live within (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), and adoption into God’s family (Galatians 4:5). Titus 2:13-14 says Jesus “gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession.”

When we are redeemed, we are transformed. We are no longer slaves to sin or to fear. You are free!

7) You are forgiven.

When we sin and repent, God wipes our slate clean. If it wasn’t for the sacrifice of Jesus, our ransom would not have been paid. 1 Peter 2:10 tells us, “Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” Jesus paid it all and because of that, we can freely live from places of condemnation. Whenever the enemy tries to remind you of your past, remind him of his future. You have the victory and he doesn’t!

8. You are included.

Feeling left out is probably one of the worst feelings! How does it feel to know that God includes you? He has been thinking of you before you were in your mother’s womb. He knew us before we were even formed!

The scripture we are studying also shows that “you were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation…” Now that you have Christ as your personal savior, you’re in on one of the biggest prizes of all time. You know the truth and will now inherit eternal life.

9. You are marked.

When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—

When God looks at us, He sees His beloved child – not someone He is getting ready to pounce on and punish.

A “seal” was a mark indicating a letter or scroll was closed or completed. When a king or dignitary wanted to show an identifying mark with a letter, he would seal it with a resin imprint of his ring. The Holy Spirit likewise shows that believers belong to the Lord.

Jesus promised us the Holy Spirit before He ascended into heaven. He calls the Holy Spirit our comforter, our counselor, The Holy Spirit guides us. The Holy Spirit empowers you to do so much! Because no, you can’t do this on your own! The fruits of the spirit. If you have accepted Christ, the Holy Spirit lives in you today.

10. You are full of hope.

The last verse talks about the guarantee of our inheritance. Jesus loves us so much that He sent the Holy Spirit to be with us and remind us that we are not alone, that everything He said is true, and that though this walk with Christ is difficult, it’s worth it. Because our reward is in Him and one day, we will be taken out of our suffering on this earth and revel in His glorious presence. God is not hiding his face.

Isaiah 59:21 says:

“As for Me, this is My covenant with them,” says the Lord: “My Spirit which is upon you, and My words which I have put in your mouth shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your offspring, nor from the mouth of your offspring’s offspring,” says the Lord, “from now and forever.”

Our salvation came at a great cost: the death of Jesus Christ. As children of God, we can be confident that God will give us what He has promised: namely, an eternity with Him in heaven.

Daughter of the King, stop looking for names and titles to categorize yourself. You are blessed, chosen, holy, blameless, adopted, redeemed, forgiven, included, marked, and full of hope!
